My aunt has asked me the same question for the past ten years of my life. Every time she sends me a text: “Hey Heath, scale of 1-10 how ya doing?” It’s our way of checking in with each other. And every time I see it come across my screen, it makes me smile.
Last weekend my dad (her brother) came out to visit from Connecticut. Every time he’s come out, I’ve wanted to share my love for the PNW with him. Mountains, trails, lakes, rivers, ocean. A true nature lover’s delight. But without fail when he gets off the plane, Seattle snuggles up with it’s gigantic puffy cloud blanket. He’s been out here exactly four times and has never once seen a glimpse of Mt. Rainier. When he told me he’d be coming out in September, I was certain he’d see the beautiful beast. But those four days were forecasted for rain and clouds. So! Instead of waiting around for the peak to peek out, we decided to drive out and hike up and over it.
My aunt knew my dad was out here visiting and text me the usual: “scale of 1-10?” text. When we got back to the car and entered the land of cell phone service, my answer back was easy: 10/10.
Through valleys and peaks, over rivers, through the fog, AND up and over Rainier, here's an album of a day that I'll remember forever.
